Shipping channels and port basins will influence hydrodynamics and mixing of salt water and freshwater. Particularly in an estuarine setting large areas of water surface will be influenced by this. This can influence aquatic life, inland salt water intrusion or unintentional loss of freshwater. By carefully taking into consideration the hydrodynamic effects when altering basins or channels the impact can be reduced. By controlling freshwater releases from dams or creating wetlands to accumulate floodwater temporary sensitive habitats can be preserved.
