Perhaps the most far reaching measure with regard to the impact of ports is abandoning all port activities. In some cases this might offer a promising perspective for the local community as not all ports, or parts of ports, are well positioned to maintain their logistic function for the future. If the prospects are dim, other perspectives can be explored. Redevelopment of the port area can be attractive if the circumstances are suitable. This redevelopment could provide an attractive post-industrial area, a valuable addition to a city. Such redevelopment potentially could reduce the environmental footprint significantly and simultaneously generating a variety of revenues.
